Roundup is among the most widely used herbicide in the world, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe. There have been countless allegations against Roundup’s manufacturer, Monsanto, especially in relation to the herbicide’s active ingredient, glyphosate. An overwhelming body of evidence suggests that glyphosate (and other ingredients found in Roundup) are harmful to human health.
Bayer AG, which bought Monsanto last year, is now facing another lawsuit related to these hazardous effects. Claims filed at the federal court in Kansas City, MO, allege that Roundup products “falsely assured consumers” that the herbicide targets an enzyme not seen “in people or pets.”
The plaintiffs say that glyphosate does actually target an enzyme found in beneficial gut bacteria. From there, all kinds of harm can ensue. Monsanto has been accused of hiding the truth about Roundup for decades, but in recent weeks, we have seen the tides turn against the biotech behemoth. Consumers are feeling emboldened by the success of other court cases against Roundup, and we are finally seeing this evil corporation being held accountable for their actions. Monsanto may no longer exist, but their legacy of corruption and malevolence has not been forgotten.
The recently filed class action lawsuit [Jones et al. v. Monsanto Co. et al., U.S. District Court, Western District of Missouri (Kansas City)] alleges that Monsanto misled home gardeners about what effects Roundup would have on their health. Bloomberg reports that three consumers are named as plaintiffs in the court filing. The products in question were also distributed by Scott’s Miracle Gro, which is also named in the lawsuit as a defendant.
The plaintiffs’ attorney, Clark A. Binkley, told reporters in an email, “This lawsuit represents the latest front in the ongoing fight for transparency on glyphosate.”
“By filing in Missouri, we’re bringing that fight home to Monsanto,” he added.
Multiple studies have shown that glyphosate is harmful to gut bacteria — and these hazardous effects can be observed in both humans and animals. But Monsanto always knew how to downplay and discredit research which shows how harmful their products are. Fake front groups, industry partners, trade groups and propaganda pushers were all part of Monsanto’s black ops effort to keep glyphosate on the market.
Research published in 2018 by scientists from the University of Hawaii at Manoa confirms that glyphosate disrupts healthy gut flora in bees.
In their summary, the team writes “exposure of bees to glyphosate can perturb their beneficial gut microbiota, potentially affecting bee health and their effectiveness as pollinators.”
Scientists have also identified similarly harmful effects in an array of other animals, including cows and chickens. In 2013, researchers even posited that “glyphosate’s known ability to disrupt gut bacteria and to suppress a family of enzymes that play an important role in detoxifying harmful chemicals could be contributing to a rise in modern human diseases worldwide.”
In a number of recent trials, juries have decided that exposure to Roundup contributed to cancer diagnoses. In May, a jury in Oakland, California awarded a couple $2 billion in punitive damages after concluding that glyphosate caused their cancer.
While Bayer may claim that the recent filing from Missouri is “without merit,” there is no shortage of evidence that glyphosate is harmful in a variety of ways. Monsanto was an evil corporation that colluded with the EPA to hide the dangers of its most profitable product. There is even evidence that the EPA ignored research which demonstrated glyphosate posed a serious risk of harm to farmers. And yet, this product still remains on the market because the mainstream media fails to report on these horrifying truths.
